Chapter 9 in A Civil Campaign should come with a warning label. "Caution: Do not start reading this chapter if you have any plans -- like, say, sleep -- in the immediate future. You will have to push them back. Several characters get screwed over so badly in this chapter that you will be forced to read another 100 pages before you stop wringing your hands."

I was up until four in the morning. Stupid dinner party. Stupid awesome Bujold.

*checks chapter though is quite sure which one it is*

Oh, yes. The Dinner Party from Hell. Utterly brilliant, and once again proving that Miles with time to plan is NOT GOOD.

Yes, yes, you did. As the chapter started, I vaguely recalled somebody warning me about a Vorkosigan party, but I brushed it aside.

Also, is it just me, or is A Civil Campaign a sci-fi Shakespearean comedy writ on a large scale? I mean, royal weddings, complicated plans of wooing, plotting ne'er-do-wells, and even gender confusion!

I keep forgetting that nobody's trying to conquer a planet or kill Miles.

I can't actually read that chapter anymore...it's too painful. Awesome, though.

My wife's favorite book. She reads it at least every other year.
