[personal profile] seekingferret asks: "Is there a genre or style of music that you think should be vidded more often, either by yourself or by others?"

I feel really horrible, but my answer here is, "I dunno." I'm not a music guy by nature, so I'm constantly playing catch-up on what good vidding music is. I approach vidding from a source-first perspective. My brain is filled with source. I seek out music so I can vid it.

[livejournal.com profile] vagabondage asks: "How did you find fandom, and how long have you been involved? What about fandom appealed to you, and what place does it have in your life?"

There are two fandom circles. I've been a member of horror fandom since I was in grade-school and a member of the horror fannish community when I said, "I can't find a website that speaks to me" and so created one. My journey as a horror fan was big in that it developed me intellectually. I was constantly seeking out film criticism and film theory and film history and trying to piece together this picture of movies, culture, and society via the lens of horror. I was always kind of off to the side within the community, however. It was very dude-dominated and I was never very comfortable there.

I found fandom as we know it via Buffy. Somebody posted the music tracks for the Buffy musical to a horror listserv I belonged to and I listened to them, then sought out the episode. Then I sought out all the episodes. Then I sought out the fans. I get into more of what I found here.

Being part of that fannish circle and then expanding to other online RP and then the vidding community developed me socially. I used to be kind of a huge loser. Now I have some of the best, smartest, coolest friends in the world. That makes me super, super happy.

From [personal profile] cesperanza : How does it feel to be (such an awesome) dude in the so heavily female dominated vidding world? Do you see something gendered in vidding, or is it just the sort of thing that more dudes would like if they'd--IDK, let go and embrace their feels more?? :D

I'm of two minds on this question. On the one hand, I kind of revel in my special snowflake status as one of a handful of male vidders in vidding culture a la Vividcon.

On the other hand, I am incredibly privileged. By not being a complete dick, I've managed to be accepted by my peers in this community and get great, interesting questions like this one. I feel like, if it was flipped, and I was a woman in a male-dominated community, I would have to work that much harder to make friends and garner a general acceptance, and there would be way more people looking to tear me down. This question might be posed as, "What are the challenges you have to face as a woman to succeed in a male hobby?"

With that said, I don't think vidding in and of itself is gendered. I understand that there are large communities of male vidders out there -- they just don't intersect with our spaces. And that's okay. I prefer my space the way it is. It's going to sound really weird to say this, but I don't really consider male spaces safe for me. I feel constantly uncomfortable and insecure. I always feel like I'm being judged on my level of masculinity. (Boo hoo, sad little middle-class, white, mostly-hetero, cis male, right?)

Do I think there's a difference in the way that guys vid in our community compared to women? Sure. Absolutely. Could I articulate it? No. Probably not. I think that there is a hesitance in male vidding to commit as deeply emotionally to our subjects. I can say that. I feel myself do it all the time. It doesn't lessen our love or passion for our subjects, certainly, and it sometimes comes out in more indirect ways. But I do feel like there's a sort of barrier or hesitance to go full-out and a tendency to swerve toward humor, action, sex, or analytical posturing (the last one is all me). Of course, if you're talking about [personal profile] absolutedestiny, none of the previous probably applies, because he make people cry a lot. F**k that guy.

In other news, my family (Mom, sister, sister-in-law, and niece) are in town and it's been a blast! However, some of these answers might be a bit abbreviated.

[personal profile] thirdblindmouse requests: "Tell us about your vidding process. In general, or of one specific vid you've made if you prefer."

I have different kinds of vids that I make, depending on how heavily they lean on one corner of [personal profile] absolutedestiny's Pyramid of Vidding (Song Choice, Edited Footage, Idea). I'll talk about my process in making the handful of vids that have been the perfect synthesis of those.

My process is going to have some overlap with what [personal profile] fan_eunice describes here. She is far more eloquent than I can probably muster at the moment, so I recommend heading over there.

Anyway, this gets much more lengthy than I anticipated, so it's going under a cut.

Youtube and I have a contentious relationship when it comes to posting my vids, but I've decided to let it back in my life on my terms. This was spurred on by the fact that I finally gave in to its request that I link it to Google+ (ended up creating a separate Google+ page for Jetpack Monkey).

Over the next couple weeks, I will be uploading the most popular vids I've made in the last two years to that platform (as long as they don't contain naked breasts -- I'm looking at you David Cronenberg and Slippery Slope).

I've already put up the following:
Starships! (Monochromatic Remix)
All the Rowboats
Va Va Voom

1. I am frustrated that I have been unable to do any real cohesive vidding since... well, since mid-July.
2. I am more frustrated by the fact that I know the worst thing I can do to future potential vidding productivity is to get in my own head about why, why, why haven't I vidded and that hasn't stopped me from doing it.

The subject is a lie, here's a third point:

3. Usually I would make a stupid random vid at this point, but I went and developed standards about these things.

All of this with Festivids coming up.

Sigh.

[personal profile] par_avion pointed me in the direction of an Ain't It Cool News post where Harry Knowles talks about one of the formative experiences of his youth -- a collection of classic horror film clips set to music that he bought on 16mm when he was very wee. He also put that video up on Youtube for others to view.

In the comments on the Youtube page, the maker, Cortlandt Hull, left a comment with a little more information. The piece, which had a title card that was cut off in the version Knowles uploaded, is called "Rendezvous" and it debuted at the Famous Monsters of Filmland Convention in 1975. 1975 is also the year that Kandy Fong started doing her thing with Kirk and Spock stills.

Hull had the advantage of having access to the actual films -- probably either 16mm dupes or the 8mm home movie versions released by Castle Films -- but it must have been insanely difficult to put together in any case.

There's a version with the title cards intact but crappier visual quality over here.

I'm afraid I'm no historian when it comes to horror fanworks, so I don't know if this was the first such horror songvid or if there was a tradition that continued from it. I know that Hull made a sequel later.

It's just interesting to see the parallel developments. If horror fandom picked up vidding in the 1970s/1980s, they'd dropped it by the time I came onto the scene (I think -- admittedly I was more of a horror fan than a member of horror fandom). The horror vids that we see today developed out of the tradition and community that came from media/slash fandom and AMVs.

A lot of different sources went into the making of my Starships! remix vid, partially out of a desire for a large range of sources, but also because I was working hard to match the clips from bironic's original vid as much as possible.

77 sources, give or take )

VividCon was amazing, but I'm not braining very well, so there may be another post later where I discuss the sources in more depth.

I will say this, though: this vid would not have been possible without Cinemageddon or Archive.org.

I am on the plane to Vividcon. I just realized I didn't make my usual "Hi, this is me" post this year. However, I have it on good authority that I will be, unambiguously, the tallest person at the con this year. So, that's me. The super-tall super-skinny guy.

Personality-wise? Well, my description from last year fits well enough. I express myself entirely in sarcasm and squee.

I am also super-huggable. Seriously? If you need a hug, I'm usually good for it.*

I cannot wait to see all my people! Hugs will be had!

I'm going to be selling DVDs in the consuite on the orphan vids table. Volume 1 (everything from my first vids through 2011) will be available throughout the weekend. Volume 2 (2012 vids through this year's Vividcon Premieres) will be available on Sunday.

If you're not following me for vids, I am super sorry, but I will be making a *lot* of vidposts this year.

* I do suffer from depression and sometimes it presents as "fuck everyone and everything ever, except you, person in my immediate presence." So... maybe go "Hug?" ahead of time.

The Club Vivid vid that I nearly gave up on? Just finished a full draft. It's not really a *good* vid by any stretch of the imagination, but I don't think it was ever going to be.

Also, my Prisoner vid for VidUKon is nearing a final draft. Just waiting on betas.

Cherry and I are putting together a vidshow for vids made from older (pre-1969, pre-1973 at a stretch) sources and as we were discussing it, we realized that there was a significant cultural gap -- we were missing vids made from older Asian sources. So we went looking. And looking. And looking. And came up with a couple Youtube vids that were sort of okay, but not really what we wanted.

So I reach out to you, my fellow vid lovers. Do you know of any vids, preferably based on the work of Akira Kurosawa? If you don't know any vids, might you be inspired to make us one? A PREMIERE?

Some great potential Kurosawa vidding sources include Seven Samurai (proto-Magnificent 7), Ikiru, Yojimbo/Sanjuro (proto-A Fistful of Dollars), The Hidden Fortress (proto-Star Wars), and Throne of Blood (Macbeth!).

We would also welcome premieres for any other pre-1969 Asian source. We're trying to make sure our playlist is properly diverse. Get in touch with me at nate AT monkeyswithjetpacks.com.

I've nearly given up on my Club Vivid vid. I just don't have the fire behind me. It's a better idea on paper than it is on the timeline, alas. I may just cut the song drastically and make it more ridiculous.

Excitedly working on vids for three different vidshows, though. I also need to get some beta work done on my VidUKon vid, so I'll be reaching out to folks soon.

I haven't even begun poking at my Premiere yet, which is worrying. I think it terrifies me slightly.

Just so you know my life isn't all vidding, I finally found a dentist and... it's going to be expensive. And probably painful. Sigh.

Does anybody know of any good fanvids made from silent movie source? Or from Douglas Sirk (or Douglas Sirk-esque) melodramas?

This is relevant to the Brand New Classic Hits vidshow that Cherry and I are putting on at Vividcon.

Make suggestions here:
http://vividcon.com/suggest.cgi

We'll also take any suggestions for awesome fanvids made from source that is 40 years old or older (the older the better). Star Trek and Man from UNCLE are both fair game, but vids that use Star Trek movies are not.

I went into this Escapade a little apprehensive -- I didn't have the best time last year, although there were bright spots. However, I really had nothing to worry about, as it turns out.

I had such an amazing time this year. A lot of it was just from the fact that it was my second year at the con, but there were other factors. I was staying with roommates this year ([personal profile] anoel, [livejournal.com profile] elipie, and [personal profile] kuwdora) who I could hang with. I knew more people. But more importantly, I saw a con that was more open and friendly, even (especially) to the first-timers around us.

In which I talk about the con )
In which I talk about the most amazing thing that has ever happened to me at a con and I still can't believe it actually happened )

I just want to give my thanks to the con organizers who did an amazing job. And I am so pleased that I was able to hang out with such a diverse group of folks. Just a small sampling of some of the people who made my weekend more awesome: Franzeska, Elipie, Kuwdora, Anoel, [personal profile] heresluck, [personal profile] laurashapiro, [personal profile] killabeez, [livejournal.com profile] feochadn, [personal profile] mlyn, [personal profile] melina, [personal profile] kerithwyn, [personal profile] nakedbee, [livejournal.com profile] renenet, [personal profile] amalthia, [personal profile] arallara, everyone who came to my birthday party (and I apologize that I can't name you individually for I was very drunk -- you were all lovely), and everyone who attended the panels I modded (even the one where I didn't show up because I was in the wrong room). There's some other folks with whom I had significant interactions, but I can't remember their names/find their journals, but you are not forgotten. Except for the name part. That I probably did forget.

Borrowed from everybody:

If there is any question you would like to ask me about any one of my vids, then go ahead! What I meant by a particular clip or sequence, why I chose to highlight that characterization, why I chose that song, what crack I was taking and where you can get some...anything. Anything you might like to know about how I made a vid, I shall do my best to answer.

I've been fighting this weird rolling illness where one or two low-level symptoms will present themselves, mess with me for a little while, and then step aside for other symptoms. I'm talking stuff like wooziness, aches and pains, sore throat, congestion, low energy, etc. Never all at once. It's super weird. It's been going on for about a week now.

I'm convincing myself that my body is doing last minute upgrades to prepare for the release of Jetpack Monkey 30 in a week and a half.

I haven't been able to respond to all the comments on my Festivids yet, but I will get to every single one. Some day.

What else? [personal profile] sweetestdrain has been guiding me through some of the major vids of the past 10 years that I've missed. There are some excellent vids that I've completely missed. [Edited to add: wow I really am sick]

Finally watched Scooby Road last night, for instance. I became all sniffly during Here Comes the Sun. I like how the vids start as looks at a handful of episodes or a particular character relationship, but then expand to consider larger thematic concerns within Buffy. With that said, a lot of the power of the vid album, especially in the later tracks/vids, hinges on Buffy Summers's emotional journey holding resonance for the viewer already. Buffy's character arc was not the one that hit me when I was watching the show; I was far more invested in Xander, Willow, Tara, Anya, Giles, and, to a certain extent, Dawn. So the parts where people promised me I would be a bawling wreck I... wasn't.

Revisions on the book essay have been turned in now, so my part in that is done.

Ugh. So out of it. I'm gonna go read a book with pictures.

By no means complete -- I haven't seen most of the vids yet (and I'm holding off on doing most of the horror vids until I can sort of group them and maybe watch them in chronological order of source -- either that or I made all of them).

Stayin' Low! (Alien series)
Just Send a Wish Out in the Dark (Avengers: Earths Mightiest Heroes)
We Must Be Killers (The Defiant Ones)
We're Here Because We're Here (Journey - 2012 video game)
Show Me Heaven (The Good the Bad and the Ugly)
Living In A Box (Maru the Cat)
Brush Your Shoulders Off (Matilda)
Raise Your Weapon (Mirror's Edge)
Enter the Circus (MirrorMask)
Sabotage (Mission: Impossible movies)
Give Me Everything (Parks & Recreation)
Rosencrantz And Guildenstern are (Still Alive) (Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead)
Angel (Splice)
What No Angel Knows (Wings of Desire)

I've seen maybe 20% of the masterlist tops. This year's crop of vids has been so so good, though that it's hard not reccing everything.

More recs as I watch more vids.

This year for Festivids, my request list was for eight fandoms that were fairly obscure and I thought to myself, "If only one of these fandoms gets a vid, it will be magic."

Guys. Guys. You guys. GUYS! MAGIC. TIMES. THREE. I received three vids! All from horror fandoms! Two from black and white sources! One with mothereffing Carl Kolchak!

Getaway (The Black Cat - 1934)
-- Karloff and Lugosi are funky in this fast-paced, superfun vid!

Another One Bites the Dust (Kolchak: The Night Stalker - 1974) - A great overview of the show that really captures the Kolchakness.

Made You Move (Eyes without a Face) - A poetic, moving vid that really captures the tragedy and sublime beauty of Franju's film.

Thank you so much anonymous vidmakers. You really made my Festivids!

-

This year I made six vids. If you guess two or more correctly, I will record a short podfic (up to 1000 words) in my Christopher Lee voice. This may or may not be an incentive. Guesses should go in the Guess the Festividder post.
