Note to self: never, ever let Miles Vorkosigan plan my family reunion.
Also, the second that Miles ever thinks anything along the lines of "no harm, no foul," he should run screaming. For a man so damned good at putting together a mercenary fleet by accident, he does seem to have massive fail whenever he does the active plotting thing.

Seriously, though. I think someone in Miles's orbit (Simon Illyan, I think) in one of the books points out that Miles is a flipping genius at seat-of-the-pants responses to complicated situations that keeps 1) him alive; 2) his friends alive; 3) hope alive.
Long-term planning? Not so much a strength. In fact, whenever he comes up with these genius ideas on the fly, the thought of sustainability over the long term doesn't even cross his mind.
Which...not a problem when you're planning a party and can rely on the Vorkosigan household staff to deal with the details. Huge problem when you, ummm, accidentally create a mercenary fleet by accident.
In fact, the Dendarii Mercenaries are a perfect example. He came up with an elegant (if complicated) solution to keep his and his friends' collective throats from getting slit. However, the whole ruse would've fallen apart if Ky Tung and Bel Thorne weren't keeping their peepers on things, while secretly "training" Miles to be an admiral.
In fact, the whole thing nearly did fall apart in The Vor Game (the book following The Warrior's Apprentice), because the situation really was pretty untenable in the way Miles had set it up (i.e., he created the Dendarii Mercenaries as a short-term solution, and didn't really give a thought to the long-run).
Still, Miles's faults is what make him so endearing (while wishing at times you can reach through the pages and strangle him).
