Epic weekend at Phoenix Comicon. Some key moments:

  • Wil Wheaton flailing wildly as he told the story of a deep, personal connection he built with a video game NPC that happened to have his voice, and the tragic outcome when said NPC was shot and killed.
  • LeVar Burton leading an entire auditorium in a "Reading Rainbow" theme song singalong.
  • Jonathan Frakes learning the verb "to Riker" (to attempt, successfully or unsuccessfully, to mate with an alien woman, as opposed to "to Kirk" which only describes successful attempts)
  • HAL 9000 conversing with Keir Dullea and Gary Lockwood (using recorded dialog from 2001: A Space Odyssey
  • Being harassed by R2-D2 on the vendor floor
  • Buying a Green Latern ring (Green Lantern powers not included)
  • Having a blast as a panelist
  • Watching with increasing horror as the Twilight panel (I was waiting for the next panel) presented a "history" of vampires in cinema, getting many key points completely effing wrong and essentially saying that Edward Cullen was the perfect culmination of an otherwise flawed subgenre
  • Buying a couple awesome prints, including one of Nosferatu and another of a hitchhiking Deadpool
  • For the second year in a row, the McFarlane King Kong figure was snaked out from under me, but I did manage to get the Gort Wacky Wobbler
  • Chibi Cyberman art print
  • James Marsters using surfer speak to describe how MacBeth should be played
  • Felicia Day hating your face (you know who you are), via her Internet Lawyer Wil Wheaton
  • Buying a random longbox of comics for the second year in a row. This year was heavy on the X-titles

Pictures going up on Facebook soonish.

I'm on two panels this year:

Thursday:

Not Another Remake! (Room 152, 8-9PM) -- Join Arizona's top Horror Film aficionados for a spirited discussion of the pros and cons of the Horror Film movement of remakes. Hot on the release of the "Nightmare on Elm Street" remake, the discourse is sure to be lively! Why so many remakes?

Saturday:

Japanese Monster Invasion (Room 153, 9-10PM) -- AZ's top Japanese Monster "Kaiju" experts examine the cross cultural phenomenon entrancing fans for years. From Godzilla and beyond and from the rise of the Kaiju in its earliest incantations to modern day interpretations.

Hope to see you there!

and as an extra-special bonus:

My interview with Wil Wheaton

Incidentally, he's just as geeky and just as awesome and you'd expect from reading his blog. Maybe moreso.

Conceited

Still writing up my coverage of my panels from Comic-Con (to be posted on Classic-Horror.com), but I did want to say that I was extremely well-received, especially in my second panel, and that I let off a few choice zingers. The one that got the best reaction:

Audience member: "What's your guys opinion on gore porn?"

Me: "Let's not call it 'gore porn.' The word 'pornography' has a very specific definition and I, for one, would like to enjoy it."

I was giddy at the laughter and clapping. GIDDY.

If you're going to Phoenix Comicon this weekend, be sure to swing by one of my two panels:

Guests discuss influential and favorite horror classics.

Panelists: Steve Ringgenberg, Nate Yapp, David Ayers, Tess Fowler, Andrea Beesley-Brown (the Midnite Movie Mamacita), and Jimmy and Bobby Calabrese.

and

So Scary You Made Me Laugh

Saturday, January 24th, 9:30-10:30pm in Superstition

Guests discuss the horror-comedy genre.

I have no idea what I'm doing or how this is supposed to work, but it should be a blast! I'll try to have somebody take some pictures for posterity.

Phew

My panel hasn't been canceled or anything. There was a glitch on the Phoenix Comicon website and a few panels were just eaten. They'll be putting them back up later today.

Incidentally, if you're going, I'll be doing two or three panels -- I'm definitely set for the Horror Comedy one on Saturday at 9:30 PM in Superstition North. I believe I'm set to do both the Horror Classics panel on Friday at 9:30 PM in Palo Verde 2 and the Series Horror panel (heh heh) that same day at 3:30 PM in Palo Verde 1.

Gearing up for Phoenix Comicon (which is this coming weekend) is not nearly as insane-making as certain other comic-related conventions I could mention, but that's mostly because I have zero idea what to expect. There isn't very much in the way of horror this year (horror guests are all comics-related), but I'm mainly going to be there for the atmosphere.

One thing that has me a little apprehensive is I'm doing a panel on classic horror films Friday night. I'm not exactly sure how that will go -- whether we'll have a moderator, who will be joining me, what kind of preparation I should do... If anybody has any con panel experience, I'd love to hear it.

ETA: My panel has mysteriously disappeared from the website -- and all the other horror panels have been updated with the names of the participants. I sincerely hope I haven't been cut.

So much stuff going on. Some of it I can control, some of it I can control but don't seem to have any desire to do so, and some of it is out of my hands.

Credits Addict: This bit is boring )

Book: Based on a promise that [livejournal.com profile] kenobi  extracted from me -- crafty lady -- this year I'm properly starting work on some sort of horror film related book. It was meant to be a book on comedic represenations of cannibalism in film, but it turns out that another author is working along similar enough lines that I need a new idea. I'm still pondering.

Web Design: Designing a website for Dad right now. It's... going.

Work: Busy.

Phoenix Comicon: Not quite sure what's going on here, because the coordinator in question is clearly very busy, but I'm fairly certain I'm doing a panel on classic horror there in a few weeks.

Fun: I do have time for that. And it's been awesome.

Anyway, in the next week or so, keep your eyes peeled for my annual "A Great Many Things I'd Like To Do This Year" list. And of course, next month we'll have my annual birthday mix CD and Top 25 films list.
